Outstanding Automatic Espresso Machine
This machine is great. We bought it four months ago to replace the old Saeco Vienna machine, and I decided to test it for that long before writing a review.

Starting up the machine takes about 90 seconds. It goes through its pre-programmed cycle, and about 1.5 minutes later, it is ready to brew. Switching from brewing a plain cup of espresso to making a cappucino takes very little time (less than 30 seconds before the steam comes out at full force). Likewise, switching from milk frothing to brewing coffee takes only about 30 seconds.

It allows you to control the fineness of the coffee ground, the amount of beans used, 1-2 cups, and the volume of the coffee per cup. The milk frother works really well. One has to practice a couple of times to attain the froth quality one likes - but that's common among all milk frother.

What I like about the system is that it does goes through a pretty thorough self-cleaning process when it powers down. It does automatic shut-off if you forget to turn it off. The time between automatic shut-off and the last cup brewed is more than an hour (sometimes it freaks my dog out when it undergoes self-cleaning and powers itself down while we are all quietly reading in the living room). The grinder is a little loud, but then it doesn't bother me as long as the coffee quality it generates is superb - and it is.

As a word caution - it is never a good idea to use super oily beans on automatic machines such as this one. Illy coffee beans works well in general, but so do a lot of other brands as long as one select the least oily blend.

Overall, I am very happy with the machine. The price is right for the quality you get. I recommend it highly.

Great Automatic Espresso Machine
I purchased this machine about a month ago, and this is my first automatic espresso machine. In short: I love it. It is easy to use and produces excellent espresso. It is also easy to use and clean.

From cold start to a finished espresso is around two minutes, and less from a warm start. The unit draws a consistently dark, rich espresso; the easy to adjust controls let you select single or two-cup, volume per cup, and darkness (strength).

The water tank is easily accessible (it holds about 3 bottles of bottled water, which is what I use since my local water is poor). It is easy to add more beans, but I do notice that the refill door is one the top in an area that makes it difficult to open fully if you have the machine positioned on a counter top under overhead cabinets.

Cleanup is easy (the unit does a small flush on startup and shutdown), and the waste tray for the used coffee (which turn into solid "hockey pucks") holds about a week's worth of waste making coffee once a day for my wife and me.

After reading many reviews for this and other brands online, I was a little concerned about the learning curve to be able to brew a good quality espresso, but after only about 4 cups, I had it down...the machine really does most of the work.

I will echo comments from other reviewers: the beans you use are important, and I have been experimenting with different brands.

I would highly recommend this unit to others.

3 years and still makes decent espresso
I've had this machine for over 3 years now and have used it daily with whole beans only (self imported from Brazil or Vivace from Seattle). Makes a decent espresso every time. I've never had to do any maintenance on it except for a weekly 1 min cleaning. I only wish that it could make a stronger espresso shot. I always have it the on max setting, but the espresso comes out slightly on the watery side. Still much better than starbucks and cheaper in the long run, but doesn't compare to the high end coffee joints like Gimme Coffee. For the price level though I think it's the best out there in a one-button automatic machine. I would lose patience with using a manual machine every morning when sleepy even if it gave better espresso.

On the Afghan Battlefield, 10k cups and counting....
I purchased the Delonghi Magnifica in the fall of 2008 for my home, but when it came time to deploy to Afghanistan again I could not just leave it at home. The Magnifica has followed my boys and I around Afghanistan and has continually provided us with tasty, caffeinated beverages throughout. The durability has really surprised me, but as in all things the key is to do maintenance every few weeks with some durgol. Additionally, we only use whole beans and clean the innards and outers weekly.

* best with Dunking Donuts whole bean coffee!

* Awesome to dial your strength by the cup!

* Hot water and steam features are beneficial to us when were in a hurry and need some snacks!

in short, you cannot go wrong with this bad boy. I may purchase another for my parents for xmas, so I can have great coffee when I am visiting home as well!

Very Happy!
My wife and I have never been a big coffee drinkers, but this machine has definitely made us more excited about drinking coffee. We're very happy with the quality of the drinks it makes and the ease of use. The only issue we have is that it's quite noisy. It's hard to turn this on without waking someone up in the morning. Although the amount of maintenance / clean-up / refills it requires is quite manageable, it bothers me that ti asks to refill the water when there is still about 1/4 left.

Anyway, apart from the noise this is a really great machine. I've very happy with the purchase!
